This floor was custom made for our client. The formal rooms in this house are extremely large and has a long hallway with a lot of light on one side. Normally we would run the flooring in the direction of the hallway, but in this situation we ran it across making the hall way feel less like a bowling alley. Interior and direction was by Stuart Rattle Interiors.

The floor was sanded and finished onsite to an antique walnut, each piece has a slight bevel. This floor is solid French Oak and was directly fixed to the concrete.

Renaissance Parquet's re-finishing work at BARNARD ROAD, TOORAK

This was re-finishing of an existing Oak floor. The house was renovated by Gibson and Szmyd, and interiors by Kristin Neuwirth from Rob Mills Architects.

The floor, cabinets and handrail were oxidized on site and then waxed. This method is an age old treatment that reacts with the timber to generate an old smokey coloured floor. It was quite a challenge to reproduce this finish on site, as we normally do this in the factory.

The wax we use is specially made for our flooring work and does not require further sanding and finishing.

A lot of people are confused for the correct term - is it parquet or parquetry?

The correct term is parquet. It is defined as 'a floor composed of short strips or blocks of wood forming a pattern, sometimes with inlays of other woods or other materials.' Whereas parquetry is a variation of the French word 'parqueterie'.

Where did the confusion come from?

An easy explanation is parquet evolved through the French Courts in the 1700's where the French word for parquet was parqueterie. The English then translated this to parquetry in reference to French parquet.

Thisfloor is random widths, random lengths, tongue and groove French Oak stripflooring. This parquet has been installed directly onto concrete as a solidwood alternative to engineered boards. The narrowness of the boards gives amore interesting feel to the floor.

Itis a good compromise between wide board plank and parquet flooring. The lengthsof this floor are up to 1200mm long; they were pre-sanded and bevelled prior toinstallation. This parquet can easily be installed over concrete, timber or acousticrubber sub-floor. It has been very popular in apartment installations.

French Oak
What does it mean?

French Oak must be one of two commercially sourced trees from France, that have been obtained through approved purchase methods. Saw millers cannot go into the forest and cut down trees without having purchased tress and agreeing to replant removed trees.

The cost of Oak throughout Europe is relatively the same, the difference in price is the value added through replanting, selected logging practices and raw log processing requirements. Many Eastern European countries do not have these which results in the finished product being substantially cheaper.

Our Oak is obtained from France, dried in Belgium to our requirements for Australia, and transported with correct chain of custody documents which declare country of harvest, species and origin.

When you buy Oak it could be called European Oak, the origin of this Oak does not have to be declared, as long as it is from the Quercus Family.

We feel other retailers are up-selling their European Oak to French Oak in order to gain a financial advantage which is unfair to the consumer.

What is the difference between French Oak and European Oak?

Oak has been used as a traditional building material throughout Europe for the past 1000 years. Each region of Europe has an Oak that they have used over time. The problem we face at the moment is that the majority of Oak products are being manufactured in China, using multiple sources for their raw materials, with the common thread being price. The problem with this is that when materials are bought on a price point, quality is not the main concern.

To make it simple French Oak comes in two species, it varies from region to region, however general consistency can be obtained by not mixing species and the age of the trees, keeping them at around 200 to 250 years old. French Oak is from managed forests with sustainable logging practices. When purchasing French Oak ensure it has a certificate of origin which includes the country of harvest. Timber that is processed in France is separated into four sections according to it's usage. The base of the tree, known as the A-section is used for barrels, sections B and C, from the middle of the tree, are used for the joinery of flooring, and finally D-section is used for external applications, such as railway sleepers. French Oak is processed and graded using strict guidelines by FNB, which manages many of the saw millers in France, they have very clear grading rules and methods for drying. Many products made with French Oak have single origin material, which guarantees consistency and the quality of the finished product.

European Oak comes from any Oak tree, any where in Europe. The age and species of the Oak does not matter, as long as it is an Oak from Europe. The source of this timber is not regulated, meaning that the age of trees, species and parts of the trees used are not controlled. The processing and grading regulations for European Oak differ between countries, however many countries that manufacture using this Oak purchase their material from a variety of suppliers. The end result is a mixed source in the finished product.

When you consider that an Oak floor will out live the people who commission it, care should be taken in understanding what they are actually purchasing. With many resellers not knowing the actual origin and many imports up selling their products with no proof of origin.

The consumer has to be more vigilant in demanding these documents to justify the extra costs that the retailers are seeking. Renaissance Parquet source all of their Oak from France, we also provide certificates of origin and country of harvest declaration, so you can be sure that you are getting what you are paying for.

This is Chevron cut at 35 degrees with bevel. The French Oak was fumed and brushed with a wax finish, this installation was made over a hydronic heated slab. We have no problems with installation on heated concrete, as long as the concrete is operational and tested prior to installation.

Oxidising Oak gives more genuinecolours, more resistant to fading and provides natural colour variation in thetimber.

This is not a new treatment, it has been around at least 300 years

The installation was made on acousticunderlay, as this is an apartment noise reduction is a requirement forinstallation.

The French Oak stairs were engineered on a ply wood core, these were installed to a stainless frame that was supplied by the owner. These stairs were to match the flooring installation.

Nostalgia wide board flooring installed in a beach house designed by Rob Mills. The interiors are very modern with a mixture of concrete, stone and timber. This was designed as a holiday house for the owners' and has a very casual beachy feel.

This Nostalgia board is reminiscent of a family floor, it has all the wear, knots and aging that you would expect from an old floor. These boards are available up to 3m long and vary in widths up to 280mm wide. An uneven surface from scrapping and wire brushing as well as variation in the grain make this product extremely unique.

Renaissance Parquet is based in Melbourne, we sell and install floors worldwide.

Renaissance Parquet is a manufacturer of high-end custom hand crafted wood floors. Our belief is that there are no boundaries and no limits. The founding concept of our floors came from the old parquet found in Chateaux and old country houses in Europe.

It took research into the ancient methods of fashioning and maintaining the Old floors, coupled with the technology of today to recreate the style. The Oak we use is French (Quercus Pedunculata; Quercus Sessiliflora), we take the time to select the timber direct from our mill in France. The trees are between 240 and 400 years old, and is PEFC with a variety of parquet floors and a solid wide plank.

Today, what typifies Renaissance Parquet is not only the unique textures and finishes but the fact that we specialise in working directly with the client. Whether that be an architect, interior designer, installer or the home owner. We aim to create the floor they want for their house, rather than offering a fixed catalogue of floors.
